Ohio Abortion Ban Gets Hearing
June 13, 2006 was an historic day for Ohio. After months of delay the Ohio House Health Committee heard testimony on the Ohio Abortion Ban (HB 228). For months the Center for Bio Ethical Reform Midwest has been helping lead a coalition of pro family groups, legislators, medical professionals, and Pastors to support the Ohio bill prohibiting abortion. Rep. Tom Brinkman introduced HB 228 in the Ohio House in 2005.
The Cincinnati Enquirer quoted Mark Harrington as saying, “South Dakota is paving the way for states like Ohio to ban abortion. Skeptics said HB 228 would never even get a hearing. The skeptics were wrong.”
Here is the summary of the event:
- More than 250 people crowded a Statehouse hearing room and overflowed into an atrium.
- Only two panels each made up of nine members from one side got a chance to testify during six hours of hearings.
- Stellar testimony was given by Dr. Jack Wilke, President of Life Issues Institute, Dr. Dennis Sullivan, Janet Folger, President of Faith 2 Action, three Pastor’s, and several post-abortive women from Operation Outcry.
- Ohio Right to Life, which does not support the bill in its current form, was the only one of the 60 remaining non-paneled witnesses to testify.
- Rep. Tom Brinkman was told that most witnesses would be permitted to speak. Many witnesses had spent sleepless nights preparing testimony and traveled far only to get turned away.
We are encouraged that Ohioans finally got to make their voices heard on this bill. However, this is just the beginning! This hearing was the opening salvo in the Ohio political battle to protect the children again. We still have a long way to go. To find out more on HB 228 go to www.ohioabortionban.com
Take Action:

Write Chairman John White. Thank him for holding the hearing. Ask that the Health Committee hold another hearing on the HB 228, and call for a vote to get it out of committee and on to the House floor.

CBR Midwest Launches 2006 Pennsylvania Key States Initiative (KSI)
On Monday June 12, 2006 we began our 4 month KSI tour of Pennsylvania. What is the Key States Initiative (KSI)? The Key States Initiative is a large fleet of billboard trucks displaying horrifying abortion images in key battle political states. These billboard trucks have been operating since late 2001 all across America.
"Pennsylvania faces one of the most important elections in recent history" said Gregg Cunningham, former Pennsylvania State Representative and National Director of CBR. "The Pennsylvania Senate race will be tight and Pennsylvania is also going be a battleground in the presidential race in 2008. Abortion will be an issue.”
Our presence in Pennsylvania will pay long term dividends. Please help fund this campaign. Join our support team.
- Your gift of $50 fills one security car with fuel.
- Your gift of $100 keeps one billboard truck on the road for one full day.
- Your gift of $250 buys 80 gallons of diesel fuel for one billboard truck.
- Your gift of $500 pays for round trip plane fare for two of our volunteer drivers.
All gifts are tax deductible. When you donate write “GMO” in the memo of the check.
The following is a testimony from the road:
“I saw your trucks rolling down the interstate. It is great! God bless you guys. Keep getting the message out. I will be sending a donation to you. Keep hitting them where it counts. Keep getting the message out.”
Please help us defend the orphan and the widow. November is quickly approaching and we have much work to do in Pennsylvania and Ohio before then. In July, CBR Midwest will launch the Ohio KSI. CBR’s Midwest office will be responsible for managing two key states simultaneously. Please pray for us.
